Wood or bioethanol

Wood gives you crackle, smell and serious heat, with smoke, ash and a fire you cannot switch off. The Buschbeck and Ochre Living fireplaces carry that smoke up a chimney, which is why they suit an entertaining area with seating nearby. Bioethanol gives a clean flame you can light on a balcony or a timber deck, but it is zone warmth rather than a bonfire. The fuel is the running cost. Fire pit, fire table or fireplace

A fire pit is a freestanding bowl you can move. A fire pit table puts the flame in a low table so it doubles as furniture. A fireplace is a built feature with a chimney. An Aluvy SAM sits between them: an open wood fire with a stainless plancha ring to cook on and a lid that turns it into a side table.

What is the best type of outdoor fire pit for a small space?

For a balcony or courtyard, a bioethanol fire pit such as the EcoSmart Mix 600 suits best: it has no smoke or embers, needs no flue and weighs little. Check your building's rules first, then see our guide to fire pits for balconies.

Do I need council approval for an outdoor fire pit?

Rules on lighting open fires differ by state and council. Total fire bans apply to open flames. A permanent fireplace may also count as a structure. Check with your council and fire authority; our fire pit rules by state guide links each authority.

Which outdoor fire can I cook on?

The Buschbeck fireplaces include a chrome grill at four heights. The Rondo and Pizza Oven Kit adds a pizza insert. The Aluvy SAM braziers have a stainless plancha ring around the fire. EcoSmart bioethanol fires are for warmth and ambience, not cooking.

Are outdoor fire pits free to deliver?

EcoSmart and Aluvy fires deliver free Australia-wide. Buschbeck fireplaces cost $150 to $1,000 to deliver by state; Ochre Living kits cost $400 to $1,800 by state and model. Checkout shows the exact figure for your postcode before you pay.

Can you put a fire pit on a deck?
