Buying guide

Which outdoor fireplace kit to choose

For smaller decks and courtyards, and buyers who want to cook from day one, choose the Ochre Living Ossa (from $3,200), which ships with a barbecue grill. For a full-height presence in mid-size areas, choose the Hotham (from $4,490); for a statement piece in larger entertaining areas, choose the Perisher (from $6,490).

An outdoor fireplace is a permanent, wood-burning masonry feature with a full-height chimney that anchors an entertaining area and draws smoke up and away. This collection holds three Ochre Living kits cast from natural volcanic pumice, priced $3,200 to $6,490, for buyers who want real timber fire and a built focal point without commissioning a bricklayer.

Frequently asked questions

What is an outdoor fireplace kit and how is it different from a fire pit?

An outdoor fireplace kit is a modular, wood-burning masonry fireplace with a full-height chimney that you assemble on site and then render. The chimney carries smoke up and away, so it reads as a built feature, whereas a fire pit or fire table is lower, open and often portable. The Ochre Living kits in this collection are all wood-fired with a chimney.

Are outdoor fireplace kits worth it?

Yes, if you want a permanent, built focal point with real timber fire without commissioning a bricklayer. These are complete modular kits you build freestanding or against a wall, priced $3,200 to $6,490, so you get the look of a bricklaid fireplace without the trade cost of one. They are cast from natural volcanic pumice and carry a 5-year warranty.

What are these fireplaces made from?

Natural volcanic pumice sourced from Iceland's Hekla Volcano. Pumice insulates the firebox wall, so heat is held and radiated outward while the exterior stays cooler than a solid-concrete build. The firebox is lined with pre-cut firebricks and mortar, supplied in the kit.

Which model suits my space?

Choose by width and by what you want to do with it. The Ossa ($3,200) is the most compact at 685 mm wide and includes a barbecue grill, suiting smaller decks and buyers who want to cook over the fire. The Hotham ($4,490) at 1,090 mm gives a full-height presence for mid-size areas, and the Perisher ($6,490) at 1,330 mm is the statement piece for larger areas.

How much does an outdoor fireplace cost to run?

There is no fuel bottle or gas line to account for; these are wood-fired, so your running cost is simply the firewood you burn. Cost varies with firebox size, how long you run the fire and local firewood prices, so no fixed hourly figure applies. The larger the firebox (Perisher over Hotham over Ossa), the more timber a long evening uses.

Can you cook on an outdoor fireplace?

Yes. The Ossa includes a barbecue grill and log retainer as standard, and once the fire has settled to coals the grill sits across the firebox for direct wood-fire cooking. The Hotham and Perisher can take a cooking grill as an optional accessory.

Can I assemble the kit myself, or do I need an installer?

You can assemble it yourself. The kits are modular and designed with owner assembly in mind, and detailed installation instructions are supplied, so many buyers build them themselves. Professional installation is also available through My Acre as a quoted service. The base must be level, stable and able to carry the weight, from 460 kg for the Ossa up to 1,100 kg for the Perisher.

Can you use an outdoor fireplace on a covered patio or under a pergola?

Yes, covered installations are possible. For sheltered spots, Ochre Living recommends adding chimney extension blocks to improve draw so smoke exits the flue reliably, and a rain cap helps keep water out of the flue when the fireplace is not in use.

What does the warranty cover?

Each kit carries a 5-year warranty covering major structural cracks caused by manufacturing defects that prevent intended use. Normal hairline cracking, consumables, and heat or accidental damage are not covered. Delivery is palletised and insured Australia-wide, and a forklift or suitable receiving capability is recommended for the larger kits.
