Which market umbrella size suits your table?

Match the canopy to the seats. The Shadowspec Oasis comes in four sizes: a 2.0m square ($790) or 2.7m octagon ($890) shades a two to four seat table; a 3.0m square ($1,350) or 4.0m octagon ($1,420) covers a six to eight seat setting. Every size needs a base or mount, from $132.

A market umbrella is the classic centre-pole design: one upright pole with the canopy opening above it. It is the simplest way to shade one table or a pair of loungers. It costs far less than a cantilever.

Market umbrella prices

The Oasis costs $790 to $1,420 in a stock colour (Oyster, Alpine Stone, Charcoal Tweed or Black), or $1,065 to $1,695 in a special order colour. It ships without a base, so allow $132 to $605 for the mount.

Where can a market umbrella go?

Almost anywhere flat: a paved courtyard, a pool deck or beside a dining table. The base is the part to plan.

Can a market umbrella go on a timber deck?

Yes. The Oasis spigot and surface plate ($132) mounts onto decking, a patio or concrete with no in-ground footing. On a deck, fix it into the framing rather than the boards alone.

How heavy should a market umbrella base be?

Follow the maker's figure for the canopy size. Shadowspec pairs the 2.0m and 2.7m Oasis with a 27kg concrete base about 500mm across. The 3.0m and 4.0m take a 35kg or 45kg steel plate or the bolted spigot.

Is the Oasis suited to a pool or the coast?

Its one-piece pole and frame are marine-grade anodised aluminium with stainless fastenings, made for salt air and daily use. Close the canopy when you are not using it.

How windy is too windy for a market umbrella?

Shadowspec rates its umbrellas to Beaufort 5, winds of 29 to 38 km/h. If it is not comfortable to sit outside, close it. Wind damage is not covered by the warranty, so use the heavier base or the bolted spigot in an exposed spot.

What if the size is wrong?

The Oasis can be exchanged for another size or colour within 14 days if unused and in its original packaging. Special order colours cannot be returned.

What is a market umbrella?

An umbrella on a single upright centre pole, the style you see over cafe and market tables. It opens straight up above the pole, unlike a cantilever, which hangs its canopy from an arm to one side.

What are the best market umbrellas?

Market umbrella or cantilever: which should I buy?

For one table, a market umbrella does the job for less: the Oasis starts at $790 against $3,490 for our lowest-priced cantilever. Choose a cantilever umbrella when the pole must stay out of the shade, such as over a lounge or a pool edge.

Can I use the Oasis at a cafe?
