Which Shadowspec umbrella suits your space?

Shadowspec makes six outdoor umbrella ranges; the right one is settled by two questions: where it mounts and how hard it works. Cantilever models (Serenity, Unity, SU4) hang the canopy off an offset arm so the space beneath stays clear. Centre-pole models (SU10, Oasis) put a pole through the middle of the table and cost considerably less. The Retreat mounts to a wall and needs no floor space at all.

Can a Shadowspec umbrella work at your home?

For most homes, yes. What decides it is the surface you are fixing to, the clear space you have and how exposed the site is. Pavers, a concrete slab or a timber deck can each take a Shadowspec umbrella with the right mount. Where floor space is tight, the Retreat works from a solid wall.

Can I put a Shadowspec umbrella on a timber deck?

Yes, with a surface plate bolted through the decking. Shadowspec's manual for the Serenity and Unity specifies four 12mm bolts through the deck into an extra 100 x 100mm joist fitted between the bearers. A free-standing base needs no fixing, but on an open, exposed deck a fixed mount holds better in wind.

Can a Shadowspec umbrella go on pavers or a concrete slab?

Yes. On an existing slab, a surface plate bolts down with four concrete anchors at least 100mm long. Shadowspec asks for reinforced concrete at least 100mm thick, with no fixing within 150mm of the edge. Laying new pavers or pouring a slab? An in-ground anchor sets into the fresh concrete for the strongest, tidiest finish.

How much space does a Shadowspec umbrella need?

Plan for the canopy plus room to move. The Serenity stands 2,908mm tall on the 3.0m square, with 2,219mm of head clearance under the open canopy. Leave a clear circle of about 300mm at the mast so it can rotate. The SU4 needs roughly 4.0m by 4.0m of clear floor on its square canopy.

Which Shadowspec umbrella suits a small courtyard or balcony?

The Retreat. It hangs from one wall bracket, so nothing sits on the floor. Its hub sits 1,419mm from the wall and extends to 1,875mm. Closed, it folds to 300mm deep. It needs a load-bearing wall of solid masonry, rendered brick or framed timber; wall fixings are not included.

Which Shadowspec umbrella suits a pool?

The Serenity, Unity and Retreat use 316 stainless steel hardware that stands up to pool chlorine and salt air. The Serenity rotates through 16 positions, so shade follows the afternoon sun without moving a lounger. Along a long pool edge, a Unity carries up to four canopies on one mast.

How do Shadowspec umbrellas handle wind?

Shadowspec rates its umbrellas to Beaufort 5, winds of 29 to 38 km/h. Its advice is simple: if it is not comfortable to sit outside, close the umbrella and fit the cover. A fixed mount holds better than a free-standing base. Wind damage is not covered by the warranty.

Can I install a Shadowspec umbrella myself?

Many owners do. Each umbrella comes with an installation manual, with install videos on our product pages. Fixing into concrete or a deck suits a handy owner or a tradesperson; for the Retreat's wall bracket, a qualified installer is recommended. Prefer it done for you? Call Hayden on 1300 515 620 and we can arrange installation.

Can I move a Shadowspec umbrella around?

Yes, on a free-standing base. On the Serenity and Unity it costs $600 more than the included mount. Castor wheels add $298. For the Oasis, a 27kg concrete base or a 35kg or 45kg steel plate lets it move between tables.

Can I use a Shadowspec umbrella at night?

The Serenity and Unity take Shadowspec's LED light, built into the top of the canopy. It costs $298 with a Smart Battery or $390 wired to mains.

Can a Shadowspec umbrella stay up all year?

The canopies are solution-dyed, so the colour runs through the fibre and holds up under UV. Close the umbrella when it is not in use and fit a protection cover. The Oasis comes with one; covers for the other models start at $118. Shadowspec suggests storing it dry over a winter you will not use it.

Can I see how it looks in my space first?

For the Serenity and Unity, yes. Shadowspec's free augmented reality tool places the umbrella in your own backyard through your phone camera.

What if the umbrella is not right for my space?

The Serenity and Unity in stock colours can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with no restocking fee; you cover the return freight. The SU4, SU10, Oasis and Retreat can be exchanged for another size or colour within 14 days if unused. Special order colours cannot be returned. Call Hayden first and we will check the fit before you buy.

Shadowspec umbrella questions

What is the difference between the Shadowspec Serenity and the SU4?

The Serenity is the higher specification. It opens on a gas strut in about five seconds, rotates through 16 locking positions and carries 6 years on the frame and 10 years on the fabric. The SU4 rotates and tilts on a simpler winding mechanism, with 3 years on the frame and 5 on the fabric. Both include one mount: the SU4 starts at $3,490 and the Serenity at $4,390.

Which Shadowspec umbrella is best for a coastal home?

The Serenity, Unity and Retreat, which pair marine-grade aluminium with 316 stainless steel hardware, the grade used around salt air and pools. The SU4 and Oasis also use marine-grade aluminium. The SU10 uses commercial-grade aluminium built for daily opening and closing. For a frontline coastal site, choose one of the three 316 models.

Where are Shadowspec umbrellas made?

Shadowspec is a New Zealand brand. The Unity is assembled by hand in New Zealand; the Retreat is hand-built there too and carries FernMark accreditation, the New Zealand government's mark of genuine local manufacturing. My Acre is an Australian retailer of the full range and delivers to every state.

What are the disadvantages of a cantilever umbrella?

All of the load sits on one side of the mount, which brings three costs. It needs a solid fixing: a surface plate, in-ground anchor, free-standing base or wall bracket, with one included on the Serenity, Unity and SU4. It costs more than a comparable centre-pole umbrella. It also needs more care in wind, because the arm that keeps the space clear also gives the wind more to push against. In return you get clear space underneath and shade that moves without moving furniture.

Do Shadowspec umbrellas come with a base?

Most do. The Serenity, Unity, SU4 and SU10 include one mount in the price: a surface plate or an in-ground anchor at no extra cost. A free-standing base costs more: $600 on the Serenity and Unity, $900 on the SU4 and $800 on the SU10. The Retreat includes its wall bracket. The Oasis is the exception, with mounts from $132.

What canopy colours are available on Shadowspec umbrellas?

Four colours are in stock at no extra cost on the Serenity, Unity, SU4, SU10 and Oasis: Oyster, Alpine Stone, Charcoal Tweed and Black. Shadowspec can also make these models in a special order colour from the Sunbrella range, in 8 to 10 weeks, for $275 to $890 per canopy. The Retreat has its own range of five colours. Every canopy is solution-dyed, so the colour runs through the fibre.

What warranty do Shadowspec umbrellas carry?

For residential use, the Serenity, Unity and Oasis carry 6 years on the frame and 10 years on the fabric. The SU4 and SU10 carry 3 years on the frame and 5 on the fabric. The Retreat carries 3 years on both. Commercial use carries shorter terms. Warranties are back-to-base for the original owner, with wind damage, accidents and misuse excluded. My Acre handles any claim for you.
