A water feature earns its place through sound as much as sight. Moving water covers traffic noise, draws birds into the garden and gives a courtyard something to sit around when there is no room for a fire.

Everything here is an Aquascape recirculating kit, which means the water lives in a hidden reservoir rather than an open pond. Nothing to fence, nothing to net, no fish to keep alive. The pump, basin, tubing and fittings all come in the box, so the kit runs once the groundwork is done.

Choosing and siting a water feature

Put it where you will hear it, not where it looks best on a plan. The sound carries a few metres at most, so a fountain at the far end of a lawn is decorative. One near a seating area or an open window is the reason people install them.

Sort power before you sort the feature. Every kit needs an outdoor-rated power point within reach of the reservoir. Adding one afterwards usually means lifting whatever you just laid around the feature.

Scale the piece to the space it sits in. An urn or a bowl suits a courtyard or an entry, where it reads as a sculpture. A pondless waterfall wants a slope and a run of garden; on a flat site the stream has to be built up, which changes the earthworks considerably.

Water feature questions, answered

What is a pondless water feature?

The water recirculates through a reservoir buried beneath the feature rather than an open pond. You see moving water and hear it, though there is no standing pool at ground level, so there is nothing to fence, net or skim.

Do I need a pool fence for a water feature?

Pondless features hold their water in a covered underground reservoir, so there is no open body of water to fence. Fencing rules vary by state and by the depth of standing water, so confirm with your local council before you excavate anything.

Is a water feature hard to maintain?

Top up the reservoir in hot weather and rinse the pump screen every few months. There is no pond to skim, no fish to feed and no chemical balance to hold, which is the main reason people choose pondless over a traditional pond.

What is included in an Aquascape kit?

The feature itself, the reservoir or basin, the pump, the tubing and the fittings needed to run it. They are sold as complete kits so there is no separate parts list to work through before the thing will run.

Can a water feature run in winter?

Yes, though in areas that freeze it is usual to shut the pump down and drain the plumbing over the coldest months. Across most of Australia they run year round without any seasonal work.

How much power does one use?

The pumps are low voltage and draw roughly what a household light does, so running cost is minor. What matters more is having an outdoor-rated power point within reach of the reservoir, which is worth sorting before the feature arrives.
