Which cantilever umbrella suits your space?

For one canopy that tilts as well as rotates, choose the Shadowspec SU4 (from $3,490). For the easiest action and the longest warranty on a single canopy, choose the Serenity (from $4,390): it lifts on a gas strut and locks in 16 positions. To shade a large terrace or a long pool edge from one mast, choose the Unity (from $8,390), with two to four canopies.

All three include one mount in the price and rotate a full 360°. They differ in how they open, whether the canopy tilts and how long the warranty runs.

Warranty terms are for home use. Commercial use carries shorter terms.

Want to angle the canopy against low morning or evening sun? The SU4 is the only one of the three that tilts. Want it open in seconds and turned with one hand? The Serenity. Shading more than one zone from a single footing? The Unity.

A cantilever hangs the canopy from an arm beside the pole, so nothing stands in the middle of the table or at the pool edge. If the space is small or has no floor to give up, a wall mounted umbrella does a similar job from the wall. For a single table on a budget, a market umbrella costs less.

Can a cantilever umbrella work at your home?

Most homes can take one. It needs a solid fixing, a clear circle to turn in and some care in wind.

Can I put a cantilever umbrella on a timber deck?

Yes, on a surface plate bolted through the decking into the framing below. For the Serenity and Unity, Shadowspec's manual calls for four 12mm bolts into an extra 100 x 100mm joist between the bearers. A free-standing base needs no fixing, though a fixed mount holds better on an open, exposed deck.

Can a cantilever umbrella go on pavers or concrete?

Yes. A surface plate bolts to reinforced concrete at least 100mm thick, with no fixing within 150mm of the edge. Laying new pavers or pouring a slab? An in-ground anchor sets into the fresh concrete for the firmest fixing.

How much room does a cantilever umbrella need?

Allow for the canopy plus room to turn. The SU4 needs roughly 4.0m by 4.0m clear on its square canopy, or 4.5m by 4.5m on the octagon. A Serenity on the 3.0m square stands 2,908mm tall, with 2,219mm from the canopy edge to the ground.

How much weight does a cantilever umbrella base need?

More than a centre-pole umbrella of the same size, because the arm holds the canopy out to one side. Use the maker's base for your model rather than a generic weight. Our guide on how much weight a cantilever base needs explains why.

How do you stop a cantilever umbrella blowing in the wind?

No outdoor umbrella is windproof; we would not tell you otherwise. Fix it properly with an in-ground sleeve or a bolt-down plate, or a base weighted to the maker's specification. Close it whenever the wind gets up and never leave it open unattended. Shadowspec rates its umbrellas to Beaufort 5, winds of 29 to 38 km/h. More in how to stop a cantilever umbrella swaying.

Can I use it at night?

The Serenity and Unity take Shadowspec's LED light, built into the top of the canopy: $298 with a Smart Battery or $390 wired to mains.

Can I see it in my backyard before I buy?

For the Serenity and Unity, yes. Shadowspec's free augmented reality tool places the umbrella in your own space through your phone camera.

What if it does not suit my space?

The Serenity and Unity in stock colours can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with no restocking cost; you pay the return freight. The SU4, SU10, Oasis and Retreat can be exchanged for another size or colour within 14 days if unused. Special order colours cannot be returned. The full terms are on our returns page.

Are cantilever umbrellas better than regular umbrellas?

For shade over a pool, a lounge or a whole dining setting, usually yes: the pole sits outside the shade and the canopy turns without moving furniture. The costs are a higher price, a heavier or fixed base and more care in wind. For one small table, a market umbrella does the job for less.

What is the best cantilever umbrella in Australia?

The best one is sized to your space and fixed properly. Three questions settle it: do you need tilt, how many zones do you need to shade and how long a warranty do you want? The SU4 tilts from $3,490; the Serenity carries the longer 6 and 10 year warranty from $4,390; the Unity shades up to four zones from $8,390.

How big should my cantilever umbrella be?

Allow about a metre of shade beyond each side of the table. On the Serenity, a 2.5m square suits a four seat setting, a 3.0m square six seats, a 3.5m octagon up to eight and a 4.0m octagon up to ten. Our guide to cantilever umbrella sizes covers lounges and pools.

How is a cantilever umbrella mounted?

On an in-ground sleeve set into concrete, a bolt-down base plate fixed to a slab, or a heavy free-standing base, depending on the model and your surface. A fixed mount, in-ground or bolt-down, is the most stable and the best choice near a pool or in an exposed position.

Where are these cantilever umbrellas made?

The Serenity and Unity are made in New Zealand and listed under FernMark licence 101031. Shadowspec is a New Zealand company. We have not confirmed where the SU4 is made, so we make no origin claim for it.
