An outdoor umbrella is the quickest way to shade a pool, a deck or a dining setting without building anything. The right one depends on three things: where the pole can go, what it fixes to and how much shade you need.

Which outdoor umbrella suits your space?

Start with where the pole can go. To keep the shaded area clear, choose a cantilever: the Shadowspec SU4 (from $3,490), Serenity (from $4,390) or Unity (from $8,390). For one table, the Oasis market umbrella starts at $790. With no floor to spare, the wall mounted Retreat is $1,790. For a cafe or resort terrace, look at the SU10 (from $5,929).

All six outdoor umbrellas here are made by Shadowspec and sold, delivered and looked after by My Acre. They differ in how they stand, how they move and how long the maker's warranty runs.

Warranty terms are for home use. Commercial use carries shorter terms.

Pick the type, then the size. A cantilever keeps the pole out of the shade; a centre pole costs less; a wall mount uses no floor at all. Each type has its own page: cantilever umbrellas, market umbrellas, wall mounted umbrellas and commercial umbrellas.

Outdoor umbrella prices

Our outdoor umbrellas cost $790 to $20,140. The price follows the model, the canopy size, the frame colour and whether you choose a special order canopy colour. A Unity Quattro in Heron Black with a special order canopy is the top of the range.

Will an outdoor umbrella work at your place?

Usually, yes. Three things decide it: the surface under the pole, the room around the canopy and how exposed the spot is.

What size outdoor umbrella do I need?

Size the canopy to the furniture, then allow room for chairs. An Oasis in a 2.0m square or 2.7m octagon shades a two to four seat table; the 3.0m square or 4.0m octagon covers six to eight seats. A Serenity on a 3.0m square suits a six seat table; its 4.0m octagon suits up to ten.

What can an outdoor umbrella be fixed to?

Concrete, pavers, a timber deck or a solid wall, depending on the model. The Serenity, Unity, SU4 and SU10 include a surface plate or an in-ground anchor; a free-standing base costs extra. The Oasis sits on a base from $154 or a bolted spigot for $132. The Retreat needs a load-bearing wall.

Can I put an outdoor umbrella on a balcony?

Yes. A wall mounted umbrella suits most balconies because nothing stands on the floor. The Retreat folds to 300mm deep against the wall. In an apartment, check with your strata or owners corporation before drilling, since the wall is often common property.

Which outdoor umbrella suits a pool or the coast?

The Serenity, Unity and Retreat use 316 stainless steel hardware, the grade used around salt air and pool water. The SU4 and Oasis pair marine-grade aluminium with stainless components. Close the canopy and fit a cover when it is not in use.

How windy is too windy for an outdoor umbrella?

Shadowspec rates its umbrellas to Beaufort 5, winds of 29 to 38 km/h. If it is not comfortable to sit outside, close the umbrella. Wind damage is not covered by the warranty, so a fixed mount is worth it in an exposed spot. Our guide on what makes a patio umbrella windproof goes further.

Can you install the umbrella for me?

Yes. Our partner installer can set the mount, fit the umbrella and check it on site, quoted separately; see installation. Many owners fix a surface plate themselves using the maker's manual.

What if it does not suit my space?

The Serenity and Unity in stock colours can be returned within 30 days of delivery, with no restocking cost; you pay the return freight. The SU4, SU10, Oasis and Retreat can be exchanged for another size or colour within 14 days if unused. Special order colours cannot be returned. The full terms are on our returns page.

What is the best outdoor umbrella in Australia?

The best one suits your space and is fixed properly. For clear shade over a pool or table, the Serenity carries 6 years on the frame and 10 on the fabric for home use. The SU4 adds tilt from $3,490. Is a cantilever umbrella better than a market umbrella?

It depends on the space. A cantilever keeps the pole outside the shade and turns without moving furniture, but it costs more and needs a solid fixing. A market umbrella is simpler and costs less, with the pole through or beside the table. See cantilever umbrellas or market umbrellas.

Are these outdoor umbrellas made in New Zealand?

Shadowspec is a New Zealand company. The Serenity and Unity are made in New Zealand and listed under FernMark licence 101031. The Retreat is designed there. We have not confirmed where the SU4, SU10 and Oasis are made, so we make no origin claim for them.

How long does delivery take?

Shadowspec umbrellas usually arrive in 3 to 6 business days, door to door, with 2 more business days to WA, the NT and Tasmania. Special order canopy colours take 8 to 10 weeks.
