A wall mounted umbrella solves one specific problem: you want shade, yet you have no floor space to give up for a base. It bolts to a load-bearing wall and the canopy hangs off an arm, so nothing stands on the ground at all. On a balcony three or four metres across, that difference is the whole decision, because a weighted base can occupy the space you were trying to shade in the first place.

Wall mounted, centre pole or cantilever: which suits a small space?

A wall mounted umbrella uses no floor space but is bolted to a load-bearing wall, from $1,790. A centre pole umbrella with a weighted base needs no fixing and can be moved, but the base takes up floor space and starts at 27kg, from $790. A cantilever needs a surface plate, in-ground anchor or free-standing base beside the shade, from $3,490. If floor area is what you are short of, the wall mount wins.

If you would rather not drill into the building, or you expect to move the umbrella around, a centre pole model such as the Shadowspec Oasis is the more practical buy. Can a wall mounted umbrella work at your place?

If you have a solid wall beside the space you want to shade, it usually can. The wall matters more than the floor.

Can you put an umbrella on a balcony?

Yes. There are two ways to do it. A freestanding umbrella needs a weighted base, which is heavy by design and takes up floor area. A wall mounted umbrella fixes to the wall instead, so it uses no floor space. The catch with a wall mount is that it needs a wall that can carry the load; on an apartment balcony that usually means checking with your body corporate or building manager before you drill anything, because the wall is often common property.

What wall can hold a wall mounted umbrella?

Solid masonry, rendered brick or a properly framed timber wall that can carry the umbrella's weight plus the wind load through the bracket fixings. Cladding or plasterboard alone will not do it. Tell us your wall type before you order and we will check it with you.

What size umbrella suits a balcony or small courtyard?

On a small balcony the number that matters is not the canopy width but the floor space the umbrella costs you. A 2.7m canopy shades a small table setting or a pair of loungers, which suits most balconies and courtyards; going larger rarely helps, because the constraint is the space underneath rather than the shade above. Measure the wall height available as well as the floor area, since a wall mounted arm needs clearance to swing out and angle.

Will it clear a window or a door?

The Retreat's hub sits 1,419mm from the wall and extends to 1,875mm, enough to clear most window frames and doorway swings. Closed, it folds flat against the wall at 300mm deep.

Who installs a wall mounted umbrella?

Shadowspec recommends a qualified installer for the wall bracket. Our partner installer can fit it for you, quoted separately; see installation.

Does it work beside a pool or near the coast?

The Retreat pairs an anodised aluminium frame with marine-grade 316 stainless steel hardware, the grade used around salt air and pool water. Close it and let it fold flat when you are not using it.

What if it does not suit my wall?

The Retreat can be exchanged for another colour within 14 days if unused and in its original packaging. Call Hayden on 1300 515 620 before you order and we will work through your wall type and measurements with you.

What can you use instead of an umbrella base?

A wall bracket is the usual alternative to a weighted umbrella base. Instead of holding the umbrella down with mass, a bracket carries the load into the building structure, which is why it needs solid masonry, render or timber framing rather than a sheet-clad wall. The other alternatives are an in-ground anchor set into concrete or a surface plate bolted flat onto an existing deck or patio. All three remove the freestanding base; only the wall bracket also removes the floor footprint.

Is a wall mounted umbrella the same as a cantilever?

It works the same way from a different fixing. The canopy hangs from an arm beside its support, as on a cantilever, but the support is a bracket on the wall rather than a pole on the ground. That is why people also search for a wall mounted cantilever umbrella.

How do you mount an umbrella on a wall?

Fix the bracket to a load-bearing wall with fixings chosen for that wall, at the height the installation manual gives, then hang the umbrella on it. The Retreat kit includes the bracket, a wall clip for the closed position and the manual; the wall fixings are bought to suit your wall.

Where is the Retreat made?

Shadowspec, a New Zealand company, designs the Retreat in New Zealand. We have not confirmed where it is manufactured, so we make no claim about that.
