This is the liner the trade uses. 1.14 mm EPDM rubber, which the industry still calls 45 mil, carrying a 25 year warranty and rated safe for fish and plants from the day it goes in. There is no curing period and nothing to leach.
The thing worth understanding before you order is that EPDM stretches. It conforms to whatever shape you dig rather than fighting it, which is why it suits natural-edge ponds, streams and swim ponds where a welded box liner would crease and bridge.
Buy it once. A pond relined in five years costs more in labour and rock handling than the liner ever did, which is the whole argument for 1.14 mm over the thinner 0.80 mm grade.
Working out the size you need
This is where most orders go wrong, and it is arithmetic rather than judgement. Two rules:
The formula
Liner length = pond length + (2 × depth) + 60 cm overlap.
Liner width = pond width + (2 × depth) + 60 cm overlap.
That is 30 cm of overlap at each edge to anchor under your capping stone.
Use maximum depth, not average
The single most common mistake. Measure the deepest point and use that figure for both dimensions. Averaging the depth is what produces a liner that comes up short at the far corner.
Round up, never down
Liner is trimmed after the water goes in, not before. Excess is cut off in ten minutes. A shortfall means starting again.
Underlay is not optional
EPDM is puncture resistant, not puncture proof. Underlay goes between the ground and the liner, and it is the cheapest insurance on the whole build.

- Underlay, between the ground and the liner. Not optional on any build.
- Quickseam splice tape if your pond is wider than the widest roll and you need to join sheets.
- A repair patch in the shed. A 150 mm self-adhesive EPDM patch costs little and saves a drain-down.
Frequently asked questions
What size pond liner do I need?
Liner length equals pond length plus twice the maximum depth plus 60 cm of overlap. Liner width equals pond width plus twice the maximum depth plus 60 cm. Always use the deepest point rather than an average depth, and round up to the next roll size. Trimming excess takes minutes; a liner that comes up short cannot be fixed.
What is the difference between 1.14 mm and 0.80 mm EPDM?
1.14 mm PondGard is the professional grade, carrying a 25 year warranty and suited to swim ponds, streams and anything you intend to keep. 0.80 mm PondEasy is the lighter entry grade for smaller ornamental ponds. If the pond holds fish or you are lining a stream over rock, use 1.14 mm.
Is EPDM safe for fish?
Yes. EPDM is inert and safe for fish and plants from the moment it is installed. There is no curing period and nothing leaches into the water, unlike some PVC liners.
Do I need underlay?
Yes, on every build. EPDM is puncture resistant rather than puncture proof, and the failure point is almost always a sharp stone or root under the liner rather than the liner itself. Underlay is the cheapest part of the job and the one that protects everything above it.
Can I join two sheets together?
Yes. Quickseam splice tape makes a permanent bond between two EPDM sheets. For ponds wider than 15.25 m this is the normal approach. Clean and prime the surfaces properly and the seam outlasts the pond.
Can I use it to line a farm dam?
Yes. The same EPDM sheet is used for dam and lake lining. The sizing arithmetic is identical, though the volumes usually mean joining sheets with splice tape. Call us with the dimensions and we will work out the roll count.
How long does EPDM pond liner last?
The warranty is 25 years. In practice a properly underlaid EPDM liner protected from sunlight by rock and water routinely outlives that. The failure mode is mechanical damage during the build, not the rubber wearing out.
