If your dam smells in February, this is the fix. The smell is anaerobic bacteria working in the bottom layer where no oxygen reaches. No amount of surface treatment will change that. Only moving the bottom water will.
The distinction that matters is bottom aeration against a surface fountain. A fountain looks impressive and does almost nothing for water quality, because it only ever touches the top layer that already has oxygen in it. A diffuser on the floor turns the whole column over.
The configurations differ in diffuser count and whether the compressor comes in a cabinet. The cabinet is worth having if the compressor will sit exposed; it is lockable, it damps the noise, then it keeps weather off a machine that runs continuously.
Two diffusers spread across a dam do far more than one diffuser working harder. Circulation is about coverage, not about making one spot bubble impressively.

Still water separates into layers. Only a diffuser sitting on the floor can turn the whole column over, which is what actually fixes a dam.

Frequently asked questions
How do I size it?
By surface area and depth together, not area alone. A deep dam stratifies harder than a shallow one of the same size. Call us with both numbers before you order, because getting this wrong is expensive.
Why not a floating fountain instead?
A fountain only moves the top layer, which already has oxygen in it. The problem is the anaerobic layer on the bottom. Only a diffuser sitting on the floor will turn that over. Fountains are decoration; this is treatment.
Is it safe for stock and fish?
Yes, and it usually improves both conditions. Aerated water holds more dissolved oxygen, which fish need. Stock water that is turning over does not develop the anaerobic smell that puts animals off drinking.
Do I need the cabinet version?
If the compressor will sit exposed, yes. It is lockable, weatherproof and noticeably quieter. If it is going in a shed you already have, save the money.
One diffuser or two?
Two, if the dam is big enough to warrant this size at all. Coverage matters more than intensity, so two diffusers spread apart beat one working harder.
How loud is the compressor?
A rocking piston compressor makes a steady mechanical hum. The cabinet versions damp it considerably. Site it away from the house if you have the choice.
What servicing does it need?
A rebuild kit every 18 to 24 months keeps a rocking piston compressor at full output. They are inexpensive and we stock them. Skipping them is how compressors die early.
Does it run continuously?
Generally yes, though many owners run them on a timer through winter when biological demand is lower. Continuous running through summer is where the benefit is.
