An alfresco area is the room you use most and furnish last. It has to cook, chill, seat people and keep the weather off; every piece has to survive being left outside while it does it.

How to plan an alfresco area

Start with the roof, not the appliances. Whatever covers the space decides everything else: how far the bench can run, whether a wood-fired oven can flue safely, how many months of the year the area gets used. A motorised louvre pergola costs more than an umbrella; it is also the difference between a space used in April and one that sits empty from March.

Then choose the cooking piece. It anchors the layout, because it is the one thing that cannot be moved once services run to it. Wood-fired ovens need clearance and a flue path. Charcoal braziers need air on all sides. Gas needs a certified connection.

Refrigeration and storage come last, so they can be built in. Front-venting fridges are the ones that fit under a bench without cooking themselves; a standard rear-vented model in the same cavity will run hot and fail. Check the venting specification before the cabinetmaker cuts the opening, not after.

Alfresco questions, answered

What is the difference between an alfresco area and an outdoor kitchen?

An alfresco area is the whole covered outdoor living space, including seating, shade and warmth. An outdoor kitchen is the cooking and preparation part of it, which may be a single freestanding piece or a full run of cabinetry.

Can I use indoor appliances in an alfresco area?

Generally no. An indoor bar fridge is not weather sealed, its cabinet corrodes and its compressor struggles in summer heat, so it tends to fail early. Choose outdoor-rated equipment, with front-venting models for anything built into cabinetry.

In what order should I build an alfresco area?

Shade or a roof first, because it decides what the space can hold. Then the cooking piece, since it sets the layout. Storage, refrigeration and warmth follow; each can be added later without redoing the first two.

How much space does an alfresco kitchen need?

Allow 900mm of clear standing room in front of any cooking appliance, plus a minimum bench run of 1.8m if you want preparation space either side of it. A single freestanding barbecue or brazier works comfortably in about 2m by 2m.

Does an alfresco area need a roof?

It does not have to have one, though a roof or a retractable louvre system is what turns a fine-weather space into one used most of the year. Shade alone handles summer; only a roof handles rain.

What materials last outdoors in Australia?

Marine-grade 316 stainless for coastal sites, powder-coated aluminium for framing, plus concrete or stone for benches. Powder-coated mild steel is fine inland but will show corrosion within a few years near salt air.
