Buying a fire table can feel a bit like online dating: everything looks great until you realise it barely keeps you warm. The short answer: focus on genuine heat output, durable materials, real safety certification and a fuel type that suits how you'll actually use it. Keep reading to avoid an expensive mistake and find a fire table that earns its spot on the patio.
A fire table is not just outdoor heating, it's part furniture, part entertaining hub. Most include a stable tabletop surface, a controlled burner, clean fuel and enough usable rim space to actually function as a table. EcoSmart's bioethanol tables lean into that on purpose: no gas bottle to hide, no smoke drifting into anyone's face, and a flame you light with a lighting rod rather than a match held near your knuckles.
A fire table that looks compact online can dominate a patio once it arrives. Before buying, check overall dimensions, seating clearance and walkway space around it. Outdoors, EcoSmart recommends at least 2,000 mm of clearance above the burner and 600 mm from fixed objects, on a level, non-combustible base. Small patios usually suit round tables or slimline rectangular models; larger entertaining areas can carry an oversized design without feeling crowded.
A fire table is still a genuine flame appliance, so safety shouldn't be an afterthought. Look for real certification: EcoSmart burners are tested to UL 1370 and EN 16647 and are ACCC compliant, with a straightforward two-year warranty behind them. If you're considering indoor use, check the product specifically supports it; EcoSmart's indoor-rated units require the Indoor Safety Tray and the included AB8 Efficiency Ring fitted, a minimum room volume of 116 m³, and adequate ventilation. If a supplier can't tell you plainly what standards their burner meets, that's a warning sign worth taking seriously.
Between UV, salty coastal air and sudden temperature swings, a cheap fire table ages fast. Composite concrete handles weather well and retains warmth effectively, which is why it's become the standard finish for premium tables. Marine-grade stainless steel burners matter even more near the coast, where lower-grade metal corrodes quickly; EcoSmart burners are Grade 304 stainless steel for exactly this reason.
Ignore any spec sheet that leans on inflated numbers with nothing behind them. EcoSmart's AB8 burner puts out 6 kW (21.56 MJ/h), enough to comfortably heat up to 60 m² as a zone heater and genuine focal point, not as a replacement for whole-home heating. There's no gas line to plumb and no tradesperson to book: the table is freestanding, self-contained, and levels itself on uneven paving with articulating feet. Ignition is manual, using a lighting rod with a fire lighter rather than an electronic pilot, which keeps the whole system simple and keeps you well clear of the flame while lighting it.
Wind protection makes a real difference outdoors. Tempered glass wind guards and fire screens, like EcoSmart's L50 fire screen, help stabilise the flame in a breeze and improve heat retention around the seating area. A good weatherproof cover matters just as much, protecting the burner, the tempered glass fire media and the tabletop finish from sun, rain and dust when the table isn't in use.
One detail buyers regularly overlook is how much tabletop is left once the burner is accounted for. A fire table still needs to work like furniture, with enough rim width for drinks, snacks and plates. Nobody enjoys balancing a glass on their lap because the flame takes up the whole surface.
The best fire table isn't automatically the most expensive one on the showroom floor. Prioritise durable, coastal-appropriate materials, certified safety standards, honest heat output figures, and a fuel type and clearance that actually suit your patio.
