Ever sat around a fire table wondering if a bigger burner would keep you warmer? With gas, that used to mean choosing between BTU tiers. The short answer: every EcoSmart fire table runs a fixed 6 kW (21.56 MJ/h) output, rated to heat up to 60 m², so there's no range of outputs to choose between the way there is with gas. The real question isn't how many kilowatts you need, it's whether 6 kW suits your space. Keep reading to work that out.
Gas fire tables historically came in BTU tiers, from around 40,000 up past 100,000, because the burner and fuel line could simply be built bigger to push more heat. EcoSmart's AB8 burner doesn't work that way. It's a standardised design used across the whole EcoSmart range, and every fire feature built around it puts out the same fixed 6 kW (21.56 MJ/h), whether it's the compact Pod 30 fire pit or the Base 40 fire table. There's no larger-burner upgrade path the way there was with gas, because the burner itself doesn't scale.
For context, gas fire tables were typically sized in tiers: small patios around 40,000 to 50,000 BTU, medium patios 50,000 to 70,000 BTU, and large open spaces 80,000 BTU and up. That scaling doesn't carry across to bioethanol, because the AB8 burner is a single certified design, UL 1370, EN 16647, ACCC compliant, built to one output figure rather than a family of burners sized to match a room.
Rated coverage is up to 60 m², which comfortably handles most patios, courtyards and outdoor lounge areas. It's worth being clear about what that figure means though: it's supplemental, zone-style heating and a genuine focal point, not a replacement for whole-home or whole-patio heating. If you're picturing it heating a large, fully open 60 m² entertaining area to the same comfort level as an indoor room, it won't; think of it as warming the seating immediately around the flame, with the table itself doing a lot of the work through radiant heat and atmosphere rather than raw output.
Because output itself is fixed, the things that change your experience of heat are all about the setup around the burner, not the burner itself.
Wind is the biggest thief of felt warmth outdoors. A glass wind guard or fire screen around the burner stabilises the flame and keeps more of that 6 kW where you're actually sitting, rather than letting a breeze carry it away.
How close you sit changes how warm you feel far more than any spec sheet number. Positioning seating a sensible distance from the flame, and within the 600 mm minimum clearance the unit needs from fixed objects, makes a bigger practical difference than chasing a higher output figure ever would.
Used indoors, with the Indoor Safety Tray and included AB8 Efficiency Ring fitted, a minimum 116 m³ room and proper ventilation, the same 6 kW feels noticeably warmer than it does outdoors, simply because the heat isn't escaping into open air. Outdoors, wind and open space both work against you in a way an enclosed room doesn't.
If you want more heat than 6 kW alone provides in an exposed outdoor setting, the fix isn't a bigger burner, because there isn't one; it's wind protection, sensible seating distance, and accepting that a fire table is a focal point and a zone heater, not a substitute for patio heaters covering a large open area. That's a fair trade for a setup with no gas line, no gasfitter and no annual service, and it's a more honest starting point than trying to shop by a wattage or BTU figure that doesn't actually vary between models.
