A drum filter is what serious koi keepers move to once they are tired of cleaning sponges. Water passes through a rotating stainless steel drum lined with fine mesh. When the mesh loads up, a spray bar rinses it with pond water and sends the waste out through a slide valve. You stop scrubbing filters on a Saturday morning.
The ProfiClear Premium is Oase's drum filter range, made in Germany apart from the rinse pump. Compact-M suits a small to medium koi pond and arrives with Hel-X 13 biomedia and aeration already fitted, so it filters mechanically and biologically in one housing. DF-L doubles the flow. DF-XL is for large koi, natural and swimming ponds.
It is not for a small garden pond with a few goldfish. A drum filter is a plumbing project: a mains power point, a waste line to drain and a pump sized to the filter. For a smaller pond, a pressure filter does the job for a fraction of the price.
Decide pump-fed or gravity-fed before you dig. Pump-fed sits beside the pond and suits most existing ponds. Step one: pump-fed or gravity-fed, settled before anything else

This is a build decision, not a preference. Gravity-fed has to be planned before you dig.

On a koi pond most builders turn the water over once every one to two hours. Take your volume, divide by the hours; that is your flow.

It also needs a mains power point and a waste line to drain the rinse water. No mains water connection is required; the drum rinses with filtered pond water.

At 75 to 128 kg empty, plan the standing position and the access before delivery day.
What to measure before you decide
- Pond volume in cubic metres, plus how heavily it is stocked with koi.
- Whether the pond has bottom drains. This decides pump-fed against gravity-fed on its own.
- The flat area available beside the pond, against the footprints above.
- Height difference between that spot and the water surface.
- Where rinse waste water can drain to, since the filter discharges it on every cycle.
- Whether you also need a UV clarifier. A drum takes out particles; green water from free algae is a separate job.

Pump-fed or gravity-fed?
Pump-fed sits beside the pond and takes water from a pump in the pond, which is how most existing ponds are converted. Gravity-fed needs bottom drains with the filter set close to water level; the pump sits after the filter. It belongs in a new build, so decide before you dig.
Which model suits my pond?
Size it by flow. Compact-M runs 7,500 to 12,500 l/h pump-fed (16,500 l/h gravity-fed) and is rated for ponds to 80 m³ pump-fed. DF-L runs 10,000 to 25,000 l/h pump-fed (33,000 l/h gravity-fed). DF-XL runs 25,000 to 50,000 l/h, for koi ponds to 100 m³ or natural and swimming ponds to 530 m³. Send us your volume and fish load. We will match the model to it.
Does it need a fresh water connection?
No. The drum is rinsed with filtered pond water, so no mains water connection is needed. It does need a mains power point and a waste line to drain.
Do I still need a UV clarifier?
A drum filter takes particles out of the water. Green water from free-floating algae is the job of a UV clarifier. Each model connects to Oase Bitron clarifiers.
How quiet is it?
Oase fit extensive noise insulation to the housing for quiet running. Site it away from bedrooms if you have the choice.
Can I control it from my phone?
Settings can run through the OASE Control app. Oase state that the DF-XL needs a Garden Controller Home or Cloud, or an InScenio FM-Master, to use those functions. Existing systems can be upgraded with a separate kit.
What does the warranty cover?
Oase give 2 years, plus a further year when you register the filter with Oase. You call My Acre and we handle the claim with Aquatec, the Australian distributor. The Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply regardless.
