The owner's insights on the Wetland Filter Kit
This is the retrofit for a pond that will not come right. If you already have a pump and a filter and the water is still green, the usual problem is not equipment failure. It is that the biological capacity is too small for the nutrient load.
A wetland solves that by adding an enormous amount of biological surface area. Gravel has vastly more surface for bacteria than any packaged filter media. The plants then remove nutrients that bacteria alone only convert.
It handles a pond or dam up to 60 square metres, which is well beyond what a conventional add-on filter will manage. The patented Snorkel Vault and Centipede modules are what make it work: they draw water evenly across the whole bed rather than letting it channel down one path.
It is a construction job, not a bolt-on. You are building a 2.5 by 3 metre bed at about 1.2 metres deep beside the existing pond, then planting it. Plan it as landscaping rather than as a filter purchase.
How a wetland filter cleans an existing pond
It is a planted gravel bed that water is drawn evenly through. The plants and the bacteria in the gravel remove what algae would otherwise feed on.
- 1Water enters below the gravelThrough a Snorkel Vault and Centipede modules that distribute it across the whole bed rather than one entry point.
- 2It rises through graded gravelThree grades, coarse at the bottom to fine at the top. Every litre passes through the root zone.
- 3Plants and bacteria strip nutrientsThe food supply for algae is removed rather than the algae being killed after it blooms.
- 4Clear water returns to the pondUsually as a stream or a waterfall, so the filter is also a feature.
Why you'll love the Wetland Filter Kit
Fixes what equipment cannot
Green water is usually a biological capacity problem. This adds capacity by an order of magnitude.
Handles up to 60 square metres
Well beyond what any packaged add-on filter will manage.
Even draw across the bed
The Snorkel Vault and Centipede modules stop water channelling down one easy path.
It becomes a feature
The return is usually a stream or waterfall, so the filter earns its space visually.
No chemicals
Nutrients are removed rather than algae being killed after the fact.
It improves with age
Bacteria and planting both establish over time, so year two is better than year one.
Why you should consider an Aquascape water feature
Aquascape originated the pondless format and holds the Pondless® trademark. The Australian arm operates from Queensland with a certified installer network behind it. Order through My Acre and we will beat any genuine like-for-like price you find elsewhere. If a warranty question ever comes up, you are calling us directly, not an overseas call centre.
Tell us the space before you order
Send us the dimensions and a photo. We will size it properly, tell you what the rock and excavation will really cost, and say so if a different kit suits you better.

Frequently asked questions
Will this fix a pond that is already green?
Usually, yes, provided the green is a nutrient problem rather than something else. Send us a photo and a description of your current setup and we will tell you honestly whether a wetland is the answer.
What size pond does it handle?
Up to 60 square metres of pond or dam surface. Beyond that you need a larger wetland or more than one.
Do I need to stop using my existing filter?
No. A wetland works alongside a skimmer and a BioFalls unit. The skimmer still removes surface debris before it sinks, which reduces the load the wetland has to process.
What plants go in it?
Marginal and bog species with vigorous root systems. Local availability varies, so choose from what grows well in your area rather than importing a list.
How long until it works?
It starts working immediately as a mechanical filter. The biological benefit builds over the first growing season as the planting and bacteria establish.
Is the gravel included?
No. It runs to a substantial quantity in three grades. Budget it before you order.
How much rock will I need?
It varies with how you finish the edges; it is also the cost people most often forget. Budget it before you order the kit, not after. We will run the numbers with you if you tell us the dimensions.
Can I build it myself?
Yes, more readily than a full pond. It is one bed, one liner and a set of modules. The critical detail is getting the levels right so water draws evenly.
