Most pond problems come back to the filter. It does two jobs: it catches the dirt; it grows the bacteria that turn fish waste into something harmless. A filter that is too small, or too hard to clean, gets neglected. The water shows it within a season.
BioSmart is the simple end, a compact flow-through filter for garden ponds up to 36 m³ with displays that tell you when the sponges need attention. BioTec ScreenMatic² is the step up for ponds from 40 to 145 m³. A motor-driven screen belt strips out coarse dirt before it reaches the sponges and cleans itself, so the biology is left to work.
Koi change the sums. They produce far more waste than garden fish, so a koi pond needs a filter rated about four times its volume. For a large koi pond a drum filter such as the ProfiClear Premium is the stronger choice.

- 3. A filter sized for an empty pond will not hold up once fish are in it. Size for the fish you plan to keep, not the ones you have today.

Your pump must not exceed the max flow. Too much flow pushes water through faster than the bacteria can work on it.

- These sit above the water line, so you need a spot beside the pond, ideally screened by planting.
- BioSmart is 382 by 555 by 408 mm. The BioTec 40000 is 788 by 590 by 445 mm.
- The BioTec 145000 is 1334 by 891 by 815 mm and 107 kg empty, which is a landscaping decision rather than a shelf.
- Water returns to the pond by gravity, so the outlet has to sit above the pond surface.

Which size do I need?
Size it to the pond volume and the fish. Oase rate each model for a pond with no fish, a pond with fish and a koi pond. The number in the name is the largest pond in litres with no fish. Koi need a filter rated about four times the pond volume.
BioSmart or BioTec?
BioSmart is a simple, compact filter for garden ponds up to 36 m³. BioTec ScreenMatic² adds a motor-driven screen that removes coarse dirt before it reaches the sponges. It cleans that screen automatically, so the sponges need cleaning far less often.
Where does it sit?
Beside the pond, fed by a pond pump. The BioSmart housing can be buried to a third of its height to hide it. The cleaned water returns to the pond by gravity, often over a stream or waterfall.
Do I need a UV clarifier as well?
For clear water, usually yes. The filter removes dirt and breaks down waste. A UV clarifier deals with the free-floating algae that turn water green. Both ranges connect directly to Oase Bitron clarifiers.
How do I clean it?
On BioTec the sponges are cleaned inside the filter. A bottom drain with slide flushes out sludge. On BioSmart a display shows when the sponges need attention.
What does the warranty cover?
Oase give 3 years on BioSmart. BioTec ScreenMatic² has 2 years, plus 1 on registration with Oase. You call My Acre and we handle the claim with Aquatec.
