Square vs Octagon Cantilever Umbrella: Which Shape Suits Your Table
Short answer: Shadowspec’s cantilever range comes in square and octagon canopies only, not round or true rectangular. Square gives the most shade for its size and suits a square or rectangular table. Octagon is the closest shape to round coverage and suits a bigger table or a curved gathering space. Does Shadowspec make a round or rectangular umbrella?
No. The Serenity and Unity ranges ship as 2.5m and 3.0m squares, or 3.5m and 4.0m octagons, and nothing else. A true circle or a long rectangle is not part of the lineup. If your table needs a long, narrow shape, or you want a round shadow over your yard, an expert round-canopy maker will suit the job better than a Shadowspec cantilever.
Octagon is where most round-shaped searches actually land. Eight equal sides read as close to a circle from across the yard, with more usable coverage below than a true round canopy of the same span.
Square vs octagon: how much shade does each give?
Picture a round table on a paved courtyard, six chairs pulled in for a Sunday lunch. A round umbrella looks like the obvious match; Shadowspec does not make one. The 3.0m square, sized for exactly a six-seat table, ends up shading more of that table than a round canopy the same size ever would.
Square wins on raw coverage. Next to a round canopy of the same size, a square canopy covers up to 30% more ground, according to Patio Productions. InstaShade’s own worked example runs the numbers: an 11.5ft square canopy covers 132.25 square feet; an 11.5ft round canopy the same size on paper covers 103.87. That is a little over a quarter more shade in practice.
A square canopy still has one practical drawback: its flat sides make it more cumbersome to manoeuvre in a tight courtyard or a slim side deck, according to Patio Productions. Octagon trades some of that raw square footage for a shape. It suits a round table or a curved open space, without the hard right angles a square canopy carries into a round space.
What size covers a 4, 6, 8 or 10-seat table?
Leave around a metre of shaded overhang on each side of your table. A 2.5m square easily covers a 4-seat setting, a 3.0m square a 6-seat table, a 3.5m octagon up to eight, and a 4.0m octagon up to ten.
On the 3.0m square Serenity, the canopy sits 2,219mm above the ground at its lowest edge and 2,908mm at the pole, so anyone who stands to serve still clears it. Shadowspec also asks for roughly 300mm of clear space around the base, for the arm to rotate through.
Frame colour narrows by size too. Space Grey comes across the whole range, but Heron Black is just available on the 3.0m square and the 4.0m octagon.
Which shape holds up better in the wind?
Octagon holds up better, by a wider gap than the shade numbers show: its eight shorter panel edges break up a gust instead of showing one long flat face to it. That is the exact flaw a true rectangle has: the long side catches the wind like a sail.
Ovios Home, an outdoor retailer, says a rectangular canopy needs a base of 100lb or more, plus wind vents, once it sits anywhere exposed. That is well past what a square or octagon canopy of the same span needs. Abba Patio reaches a similar view: octagon surpasses round in breezy conditions.
