The owner's insights on the Oase Preformed Pond Shell
A preformed shell is the shortest route from bare lawn to a pond holding water. The shape is decided for you, which is the point: dig to it, sit it in, backfill, fill. There is no liner to cut, fold or weld, nothing to puncture on a sharp stone.
Oase mould these with stepped depth zones rather than as a plain bowl. The shallow shelves hold marginal plants at the depth they want, while the deeper centre carries the volume. Planted out, the black edge disappears within a season.
Be clear on the limits. Three sizes run from 500 to 1000 litres, which is a garden pond rather than a fish pond. Plants thrive, a few small goldfish will live happily once a filter is running, koi will not. For koi you want depth and volume that a shell this size cannot give.
The shell is the only thing in the box. Pump, filter and lighting are chosen once you know what you are keeping, which we would rather do with you than sell you a set you do not need.

Work out which size fits
Step one: mark the footprint on the ground
- 1. Lay a hose or a rope in the shape and size below, in the spot you have in mind.
- 2. Live with it for a day. A pond always reads smaller once it is in the ground than it does on paper.
- 3. Allow another 30 cm of working room all the way around for backfilling, which you will get back when you edge it.
- 4. Check the whole footprint is level ground, or that you are prepared to cut into a slope on one side.

That height is the depth of the hole you dig, plus a bed of sand. It is not the water depth: Oase do not publish one, so ask us rather than assume.

- Access to get the shell in: the 1000 is 2.4 m long, so think about gates and corners.

Frequently asked questions
How deep is the water?
Oase publish the overall height of the moulding, which is 0.56 m on the 500, 0.60 m on the 750 and 0.62 m on the 1000. They do not publish a water depth or the depth of each shelf. We would rather tell you that than quote you a number we cannot stand behind. Ask us and we will measure a shell before you buy.
Do I still need a liner?
No. The shell holds the water on its own. You need bedding sand under it and backfill around it, nothing else to make it watertight.
Can I keep fish in it?
A few small goldfish suit the larger sizes, once a filter is running. These are not koi ponds: koi need far more depth and volume than a shell of this size gives, along with much heavier filtration.
What else do I need?
A pump if you want movement. A filter if you want clear water with fish. A UV clarifier if it greens up in summer. None are included. Tell us what you plan to keep and we will size them together.
How do I install it?
Dig to the shape, allowing for a level bed of sand, sit the shell in, check it is level in both directions, then backfill in stages while filling with water so the sides are supported evenly. Oase do not publish an installation guide for these on the Australian site.
What is the guarantee?
Oase give 15 years on the shell. You call My Acre on 1300 515 620 and we take the claim up with Aquatec.
