The owner's insights on the Small Pondless Waterfall Kit

This is the entry point into the pondless range proper. For most suburban backyards it is the sensible one. Two metres of stream is a garden feature you walk past and hear, not a landscaping project that takes over the yard.

The reservoir holds 201 litres, which supports about 1.3 square metres of stream. Spend that long and narrow or short and wide, whichever suits the spot. Short and wide usually reads better in a small garden.

Rock is the part people underestimate. A two metre stream wants close to a tonne of rock and boulder, plus pebble on top. It is the cheapest kit in the pondless range and still needs a truck.

If you have a natural slope, a bank, or a retaining wall to run water down, this kit fits it. On dead flat ground you are building the header up first, which is a bigger job than the kit itself.

How a pondless waterfall actually works

It is a closed loop, half of it buried. The same water goes round and round. None of it ever sits in an open pond. This is the half that photographs never show you.

Cutaway of a pondless waterfall Side cut-away. A pump inside the buried vault (1) sends water up a hidden pipe to the spillway (2). It runs down the rock stream you build (3), then soaks through the gravel back into the 201 litre reservoir (4). Brown marks parts supplied in the kit. Grey stone is supplied by you. 1 2 3 4

  4. 4It soaks back throughThe water drains through the gravel into the 201 L reservoir, then round again.

Why you'll love the Small Pondless Waterfall Kit

Nothing stands open

Water disappears into gravel at the base. No pond to fence, no still surface, nothing to net or skim.

Fits a normal backyard

Two metres of stream and 68 kg of kit, rather than the truckload and the excavator the larger kits ask for.

Tops itself up

The Compact Fill Valve plumbs to your tap and replaces what evaporates, so you are not dragging a hose out every fortnight.

One kit instead of a parts list

Reservoir, pump, both liners, underlay, spillway, pipe, check valve and sealants, matched to each other before they arrive.

Almost no maintenance

No fish to feed, no surface to skim, no seasonal die-off. Clear the leaves and rinse the pump intake occasionally.

Extends later

Additional AquaBlox grow the reservoir if you decide to lengthen the stream down the track.

Why you should consider an Aquascape water feature

Aquascape originated the pondless format and holds the Pondless® trademark. The Australian arm operates from Queensland with a certified installer network behind it. Order through My Acre and we will beat any genuine like-for-like price you find elsewhere. If a warranty question ever comes up, you are calling us directly, not an overseas call centre.

Talk it through before you order

Tell us the fall you have and the width you want. We will run the reservoir and rock numbers with you. We will sort the install if you would rather not build it yourself.

What is included and what you supply

This is the single thing buyers most often get wrong. The kit is the plumbing, not the landscaping.

In the box:

  • Pondless Waterfall Vault and three Small AquaBlox (201 L reservoir)
  • AquaSurge
  • Waterfall Spillway
  • 3.05 m x 3 m epdm reservoir liner and a 3.05 m x 3 m stream liner
  • Underlay, 36 m²
  • 40 mm flexible pvc and dual-union check valve
  • Compact Fill Valve, tap fitting and poly pipe
  • Installation kit: silicone, waterfall foam and Christy's Red Hot Blue Glue

You supply:

  • The excavation, at least 650 mm deep at the basin
  • Approximately 1 tonne of rock and boulder
  • Pebble, roughly 30 per cent of the rock weight again
  • A weatherproof outdoor power point within reach of the basin
  • The fall, either a natural slope or one you build

Before you start

Making the water fall where you want it

Waterfall foam is what turns a pile of rock into a clean sheet of water. This is how it is used.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pondless waterfall, in plain terms?

A waterfall with no pond at the bottom. The water runs down a stream you build, soaks into gravel at the base, collects in a hidden tank underground, then gets pumped back to the top. You see and hear moving water with nothing standing open at ground level.

How much stream will 201 litres run?

About 1.3 square metres. Aquascape's own formula asks for 154 litres of reservoir per square metre of stream. Spend that area long and narrow or short and wide, whichever suits the spot.

How much rock will I need?

Rock and pebble are not included. Aquascape allows roughly 1.4 tonnes per three metres of stream, so a two metre run needs about 1 tonne, with pebble on top at around 30 per cent of that weight again. Arrange it locally and have it on site before you begin.

How deep do I need to dig?

At least 650 mm at the basin, which is the height of the Pondless Waterfall Vault. The stream bed above it is shallow by comparison, following whatever fall you have.

Does it work on flat ground?

It can, but you have to build the top up first so the water has somewhere to fall from. A natural slope, bank or retaining wall makes the job far simpler. On flat ground, budget for the fill and retaining as a separate item.

Does it need power?

Yes. The pump runs on mains power and needs a weatherproof outdoor power point within reach of the basin. Have a licensed electrician install one if you do not already have it.

Can I install it myself?

Most people can. It is excavation, liner, rock and one plumbing run. The manual covers every step. If you would rather not, we can organise a certified installer or work with your own landscaper.

Can I add lighting later?

Yes. This kit ships without lights. Aquascape LED units can be added to the stream afterwards. If you know you want lighting from day one, the Medium kit includes a white LED package.

Review of Polito pizza ovens

I recently bought a Polito pizza oven from my acre. I was looking to replace an older outdated oven in my outdoor kitchen, which had started to fall apart after a few years cooking for the Boiz. I wasn't super stoked at first to spend this much on a pizza oven, but suppliers in NSW are hard to come by and Hayden was super helpful with organising getting it to me. I certainly wasn't upset when it arrived! I dont think I'll have to replace it any time soon

Thankyou so much for the purchase & nice words Phil! So glad we could help!
