This is the one to choose when space is the constraint rather than budget. A 61cm column occupies almost no plan area, so it fits in a garden bed beside a path or in the corner of a courtyard where a bowl or an urn would crowd everything around it.
Basalt columns are a real landscape material, usually quarried and drilled to order at considerable cost and weight. This is a composite cast from real basalt, so you get the form and texture at a fraction of the weight and without a crane.
The water behaviour is specific. It rises through the core and spills from the centre of the top face, so it runs down all sides evenly rather than off one edge. Against a wall that gives you a column of movement rather than a directional fall.
It runs an Ultra 2100 into an AquaBasin 30, which is the smallest combination Aquascape supply. Expect a soft, close sound. If you are trying to mask road noise across a whole courtyard, the Medium urn or a spillway bowl will do more.
How a self-contained fountain actually works
It is a closed loop with half of it buried. The same water circulates continuously. Nothing ever stands in an open pond, which is the whole point of the format.

What is included and what you supply
A complete kit. The pebble that dresses the grate is the only thing you add.

Frequently asked questions
Is there any open water?
No. The only water you see is the film moving over the feature itself. Everything else sits below ground inside a sealed basin under a grate, so there is nothing for a child to step into.
Is it real basalt?
No, it is a composite cast from a real basalt column. That is deliberate: quarried basalt of this size needs a crane, an engineered footing and core drilling, which puts it in a different price and complexity bracket entirely.
How loud is it?
A soft trickle rather than a roar. These are sized to mask traffic noise at conversational distance, not to be heard from inside the house. A taller drop makes more sound than a wider one.
Will one column be enough?
On its own it is a quiet, close feature. Aquascape also sell columns in sets of three at varying heights, which is the more common landscape treatment. Ask us if you want the grouped look.
How often do I top it up?
Through summer, roughly weekly. Evaporation is the only loss in a sealed system. A hot windy week takes more than a still one.
Does it need power?
Yes. The pump runs on mains power and needs a weatherproof outdoor power point within reach of the basin. Have a licensed electrician install one if you do not already have it.
Can I move it later?
Yes, which is one of the real advantages over a pond. Drain it, lift the feature, dig out the basin and start again somewhere else. People do take these with them when they sell.
Can I install it myself?
Most people can. It is a shallow excavation, a level base, one plumbing connection and a power point. If you would rather not, we can organise a certified installer or work with your own landscaper.
