Cold nights, toasted marshmallows and someone still saying "should've brought a jumper". So, what is a fire table? It's a stylish outdoor table with a built-in flame that adds warmth, atmosphere and a reason to stay outside longer. Keep reading to learn how it works, what to look for, and why Aussie backyards have taken to them.
A fire table is where outdoor comfort meets clever design. It works like a regular outdoor table but with a flame built into the centre, part coffee table, part cosy fire, considerably more polished than either on its own. Unlike a traditional fire pit, a fire table gives you somewhere to actually rest a drink while still keeping everyone warm, and it becomes the natural gathering point on the patio the moment it's lit.
EcoSmart's range, which is what My Acre stocks, runs on bioethanol rather than gas. The AB8 burner is Grade 304 stainless steel and holds 8 L of e-NRG fuel, which burns at about 1.1 L per hour on full flame for 7 to 9 hours per fill. There's no gas bottle, no flue and no smoke, just heat, steam and a little carbon dioxide leaving the flame.
A quality fire table is more than a pretty flame. The burner system is the main event, and premium models use stainless steel because it handles heat and weather far better than cheaper alternatives. Decorative fire media sits over the burner to spread the flame evenly and add visual interest; EcoSmart uses tempered glass media, rated to 700°C, rather than lava rock, so there's nothing porous sitting directly in the flame to worry about.
Lighting is manual, using a stainless steel lighting rod dipped briefly at the burner and touched to a fire lighter, since there's no electronic ignition or pilot light to fail. It's a small detail, but it means the whole system stays simple: no wiring, no batteries, nothing to service.
Not every backyard needs a giant fire feature. Fire tables now come in almost every shape, from long dining-style tables to low coffee-height designs and compact bowls suited to apartment balconies. The trick is choosing something that suits your space without making the area feel cramped; bigger isn't always better on a smaller deck.
For relaxed lounge seating, leaving around 90 cm of clearance for people to move comfortably works well for most patios. Soft outdoor seating and warm lighting finish the look, turning a backyard into something closer to an outdoor lounge.
Bioethanol fire tables have become popular precisely because there's nothing to install. No gas line, no permanent connection, no compartment for a hidden cylinder. That makes them genuinely suited to renters and smaller courtyards, where a full gas installation was never going to happen anyway. Because there's no flue to vent, over 90% of the heat stays in the room or seating area, rather than the roughly 70% that escapes up a flue on gas or wood setups.
Australian weather is not gentle on outdoor furniture, so material quality and genuine certification both matter. EcoSmart burners are tested to UL 1370 and EN 16647 and are ACCC compliant, with a two-year warranty through My Acre. Outdoors, keep at least 2,000 mm of clearance above the burner and 600 mm from fixed objects, on a level, non-combustible base. There's no gasfitter to book and no gas certificate to obtain, since there's no gas supply involved at all.
A burner lid converts the fire feature into a fully usable table when the flame isn't running. Weatherproof covers shield the surface, the burner and the glass media from sun, rain and dust between uses. Tempered glass wind guards and fire screens, like EcoSmart's L50 fire screen, help stabilise the flame in a breeze and improve heat retention around the seating area.
The right fire table can genuinely change how often you use your outdoor space. Whether you want a large statement piece for entertaining or a compact tabletop flame for quiet evenings, focus on real stainless steel, genuine certification, and a fuel type that doesn't need an installation you don't want to pay for.
