How to Clean Mould and Mildew Off an Umbrella Canopy
Short answer: Combine 240 ml of bleach and 60 ml of mild soap into 4 L of clean water. Spray it over the mould, let it soak in, then scrub with a soft brush and rinse thoroughly. Brush off loose dirt, hose the canopy down, then wash it with a mild soap in lukewarm water, no hotter than 37°C, and rinse thoroughly before it air dries. Skip the tumble dryer, the steam press and any heavy detergent; all three can shrink or damage the acrylic weave. A weekly rinse through summer, and a proper wash before the canopy goes into storage, keeps mould from taking hold in the first place.
Mixing the bleach solution correctly
Once mildew has actually set in, Shadowspec’s guidance moves to a stronger mix: 240 ml of bleach and 60 ml of mild soap dissolved into 4 L of clean water. Spray the solution over the affected area, give it time to soak into the fabric, then scrub with a soft bristle brush, a sponge or a clean towel before rinsing thoroughly. Test the solution on a hidden section of canopy first, since not every acrylic fabric responds to bleach the same way. The part most cleaning guides skip: this treatment removes part of the fabric’s built-in water repellency. Once the canopy is dry, an air-curing fabric guard restores it.
