Short answer: a true outdoor bar fridge is built to run reliably in heat and weather, with a marine-grade stainless cabinet, weather sealing and, for built-in installs, front venting. An ordinary indoor bar fridge will struggle and corrode outdoors, so the cabinet rating and the venting are what you are really paying for.
This guide explains what makes a fridge outdoor-rated, how to size it, and the built-in versus freestanding decision. The models referenced come from the outdoor fridges we curate at My Acre.
An outdoor bar fridge is engineered for higher ambient temperatures and exposure that would defeat an indoor unit. Look for four things: a corrosion-resistant stainless cabinet, ideally 316 marine-grade near the coast; weather sealing around the door and controls; a compressor rated to keep cold in hot conditions; and front venting if it will be built in. The Rhino ENVY range, for example, uses 316 marine-grade stainless for exactly this reason.
The temptation is to put a cheaper indoor bar fridge outside. It rarely ends well: the cabinet rusts, the seals degrade and the compressor labours in summer heat, shortening its life. The difference is built into the fridge.

If the fridge slots into an outdoor kitchen or bar cabinetry, it must be front-venting, because a rear or side-venting fridge boxed into joinery cannot shed heat and will fail. Freestanding units can vent at the back and simply stand against a wall. Rhino's GSP alfresco and ENVY ranges include front-venting models made to build in.
Match capacity to how you entertain. Capacity is quoted in litres, which roughly tracks how many cans and bottles you can chill at once.

Near the sea, salt air corrodes ordinary stainless over time. Marine-grade 316 stainless, used in the Rhino ENVY range, contains more of the elements that resist that corrosion, which is why it is the sensible choice for coastal and prestige-suburb outdoor kitchens.

It is not recommended. An indoor bar fridge is not weather sealed, its cabinet corrodes outdoors, and its compressor struggles in summer heat, so it tends to fail early. An outdoor-rated fridge with a stainless cabinet and a heat-tolerant compressor is built for the conditions.
316 stainless is a marine-grade alloy that resists salt-air corrosion better than standard 304 stainless. For coastal homes, a 316 cabinet such as the Rhino ENVY keeps the fridge looking and performing well for far longer.
Only if it is built into cabinetry. A built-in fridge must vent from the front to shed heat, or it will overheat and fail. A freestanding fridge standing against a wall can vent from the rear.
For a couple or occasional guests, a single-door fridge around 120 to 150L is enough. Regular entertainers are comfortable at 200 to 250L, while 330L and larger three-door units suit serious hosting or a combined beer and wine setup.
