Bioethanol Fireplaces Indoors: An Australian Buyer's Guide

Bringing a real flame into the living room usually means a builder, a flue and a five-figure quote. A bioethanol fire changes that. The short answer: an indoor bioethanol fireplace needs an indoor-rated model fitted with its Indoor Safety Tray, a room that meets the minimum size, ventilation and e-NRG fuel, with no flue and no gas line. Here is how to choose one in Australia.

The Starting Point: Can You Have a Bioethanol Fireplace Indoors?

Yes, you can have a bioethanol fireplace indoors on a model certified for indoor use. Across the EcoSmart range the indoor-rated pieces are certified to European standard EN 16647 and comply with the Australian ACCC safety standard, and indoor use requires the model's Indoor Safety Tray to be fitted first. It is the freedom of a real fire with none of the building work, which is why how a bioethanol fireplace works begins with the fact that it needs no flue.

The Shortlist: Which EcoSmart Models Are Rated for Indoors?

Ratings differ by model, so the rule is to check the individual product page before you buy, or ask us and we will confirm it for your room. As a starting point:

  • Indoor-rated fire pits: the Stix, Stix 8, Pod 30 and Pod 40
  • Outdoor only: the Mix and Nova fire pits
  • Fire tables: several carry an indoor-or-outdoor rating once the Indoor Safety Tray is fitted

The Space: How Big Does the Room Need to Be?

An indoor bioethanol fire needs a room above a minimum volume so normal air change keeps oxygen and carbon dioxide within safe levels. EcoSmart sets that minimum at 40 cubic metres for the small AB3 burner and 116 cubic metres for the large AB8, which is roughly a 4 by 4 metre room and a 7 by 7 metre room at a standard ceiling height. Most living rooms clear it easily; most bedrooms do not, and bathrooms are not allowed. A working smoke alarm is required. For the full safety picture, see are bioethanol fireplaces safe.

The Cost: How Much Does an Indoor Bioethanol Fireplace Cost to Run?

An indoor bioethanol fire costs about $2 to $7.30 an hour in e-NRG fuel, depending on the burner, with fuel the only running cost. There is no gas connection or standing charge, and the first two cartons of e-NRG are included with every EcoSmart fire at My Acre. The full breakdown is in how much a bioethanol fireplace costs to run.

Will It Warm the Room?

Yes, for the room it sits in. A large AB8 burner warms up to about 60 square metres and, with no flue, keeps more than 90 per cent of its heat indoors, so a single living area feels genuinely warmer. It is a warm feature fire rather than central heating, as do bioethanol fireplaces give off heat explains.
