Do Bioethanol Fireplaces Give Off Heat?

Everyone loves the look of a bioethanol flame, but the real question at the point of buying is simple: will it actually warm you up? The short answer: yes, a bioethanol fireplace gives off real, usable heat, up to about 6 kW from a large burner, and with no flue more than 90 per cent of that heat stays in the room with you. Here is how much it warms, and where it fits.

The Output: How Much Heat Does a Bioethanol Fireplace Give Off?

A bioethanol fireplace gives off real radiant warmth you feel from the flame, not a fan-forced blast. The amount comes down to the burner:

  • Large AB8 burner: about 6 kW, or 21.56 megajoules an hour, comparable to a good electric room heater
  • Small AB3 burner: about 2 kW, right for a compact space or a courtyard corner

What That Means in Plain Terms

Six kilowatts is genuine, useful heat for the seating area around the fire. Because a bioethanol fire has no flue, none of it disappears up a chimney, so more of the energy you pay for is warmth you actually feel.

Coverage: Will a Bioethanol Fire Heat a Room?

Yes, a bioethanol fire heats the room it sits in, up to about 60 square metres for the large AB8 burner and around 20 square metres for the small AB3. It warms by radiant heat off the flame and gentle convection, and with no flue carrying heat away, almost all of it stays with you. In a large open-plan space it works best as a warm focal point for the area you are actually sitting in.

The Comparison: Is Bioethanol or Gas Hotter?

A large flued gas fire can produce a higher raw output, but it loses a meaningful share of that heat up the flue. A bioethanol fire has no flue, so more than 90 per cent of its heat stays in the room, which narrows the real-world gap. If running cost is part of the decision, our bioethanol vs gas fireplace guide compares both with a calculator, and how much a bioethanol fireplace costs to run covers the fuel side.

Outdoors: Does a Bioethanol Fire Keep You Warm on the Patio?

Outdoors, a bioethanol fire warms the people and surfaces near it rather than the open air, so you sit close, as you would around any fire. Wind carries warmth away and makes the burner use fuel faster; a sheltered position and a glass fire screen keep both the heat and the flame steady. For a covered alfresco area or courtyard, the large AB8 pieces give the most usable warmth.

A Warm Feature Fire, Not Central Heating

It is worth being honest about what a bioethanol fire is: a warm, beautiful feature for the room or terrace it sits in, not a replacement for ducted or hydronic heating across a whole house. For a single living area it adds real warmth and atmosphere; for the whole home it complements your main heating rather than replacing it.
