Short answer: a fire table needs a cover because it protects the finish and the stainless steel burner from UV, rain, salt air and debris, which keeps an EcoSmart bioethanol fire table in good condition and extends its life between uses. Here is what a cover actually guards against, and how to choose one.
Australian conditions are hard on anything left outside year-round. Constant UV fades finishes, rain and coastal salt air work on exposed metal over time, and leaves, pollen and dust settle around the burner. None of it happens overnight, but even a well-built table starts looking tired a season or two sooner than it should when it sits uncovered through summer and winter.
On an EcoSmart bioethanol fire table the working part is a grade 304 stainless steel burner holding liquid e-NRG fuel, with tempered glass media on top. There are no gas jets or manifold to block, which is one less thing to maintain, but weather still matters: rainwater pooling in the fuel tray floats on the next fill and can leave a weaker, uneven flame, and salt or grime slowly dulls the stainless finish. A cover keeps rain, dust and leaves out of the tray and off the burner between uses.
The real winter concern in Australia is moisture, condensation and repeated damp-then-dry cycles, not extreme cold. GFRC concrete surrounds are naturally porous and hold up far better kept dry, and any exposed metal benefits from staying out of constant wet. A cover limits that exposure over the months a table sits unused, which is when most avoidable wear happens.
Spiders and insects look for dry, sheltered spots, and leaves and pollen gather around the burner and glass media when a table sits idle. A fitted cover with a proper hem keeps them out, so the table lights cleanly when you next want it rather than needing a clean-out first.

Never cover a warm fire table. Let the burner cool fully, at least 60 minutes after it is out, before fitting the cover. Covering it too early traps heat and moisture underneath, which can damage both the cover material and the finish.
