The shell is 600 mm across and 380 mm high. It burns from a 1.5 litre combustion chamber and gives out 3.0 kW. You pour the fuel in by hand, so there is no gas line to run and no hearth to build.

Choose the finish by where it will live. The stainless steel model is marine grade; Cocoon Fires say that lets it be used all year round, which is why it is the one to choose for a sheltered outdoor room as well as a living room. It is also the only Aeris that turns a full 360 degrees on its telescopic pole. The matt black and matt white models are made for indoor use only, though a covered alfresco is fine as long as it is not exposed to direct rain or water.

Check the ceiling before anything else. The fixing point has to be load bearing and rated for at least 150 kg. The anchors are not in the box because they depend on what your ceiling is made of. The stainless pole sets at five heights from 985 mm to 1345 mm. The black and white poles are built from fixed lengths, with an angled ceiling base for a raked ceiling of up to 25 degrees on the white angled pole model. We go through the ceiling and the room height with you before the order goes in.

The Aeris is not the fire for an exposed, windy deck; for that we would point you to an EcoSmart fire table or an Ochre Living wood fireplace. If your ceiling cannot take the load, the Cocoon Pedestal is the same shell on a floor stand. The Vellum puts it on the wall.

Why you'll love the Cocoon Aeris Hanging

The fire at eye level

Hung from the ceiling, the flame sits in the middle of the room where everyone can see it.

No gas line to install

It runs on bioethanol poured into a 1.5 litre burner, so there is nothing to plumb in.

3 to 5 hours a fill

The Cocoon Fires manual gives 3 to 5 hours from one 1.5 litre fill, with 3.0 kW of heat.

Stainless for indoors and out

Cocoon Fires say the marine grade stainless model can be used all year round, inside or in a sheltered outdoor room.

Turns to face the room

The stainless telescopic pole rotates 360 degrees and sets at five heights.

A drinks server in summer

On the stainless model, lift out the burner and trays, then fill the shell with ice for drinks.

Why you should consider a Cocoon Fires fireplace

Every Cocoon Fires model is built around the same rounded shell, so it looks like a sculpture when it is not lit.
